What is Photorejuvenation?
Living in New Mexico’s beautiful, sunny climate offers many advantages; however, chronic sun exposure drastically heightens the risk for severe skin damage. The ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun are responsible for 80-90% of the visible signs of aging, and can trigger the development of irregular pigmentation spots on the face, hands, arms, chest, and shoulders. Photorejuvenation is an aesthetic treatment designed to counteract the cumulative effects of sun damage with the use of intense broadband light. This form of light is preferentially absorbed by both the brown and red pigment in the skin, and works to minimize the appearance of sun- and age-related skin damage, while enhancing the texture, tone, appearance, and overall condition of the skin.
Photorejuvenation treatments are appropriate treatment option for patients seeking to correct the following skin conditions:
- Rosacea
- Redness
- Broken capillaries (telangiectasia)
- Sun spots
- Age spots
- Fine lines
- Enlarged pores
- Wrinkles
- Hyperpigmentation/skin discolorations resulting from smoking, alcohol use, or hormonal shifts
Because of the non-invasive nature of photorejuvenation light therapy, you should experience little (if any) discomfort during your treatment and will be able to resume your normal activities immediately thereafter. Achieving optimal results from photorejuvenation is only possible when this treatment is administered by an experienced aesthetic enhancement specialist, such as Dr. Stephen A. Rath, lead physician at Fusion Medical Spa. Dr. Rath is dedicated to keeping up with the latest developments in the field of medical aesthetics and has helped many patients reveal glowing, youthfully revitalized complexions with customized photorejuvenation treatments.
Photorejuvenation Procedure and Results
Prior to your photorejuvenation treatment, a cold gel will be applied to the treatment area and you will be provided with protective eyewear. During the 30-45 minute treatment, Dr. Rath will move the photorejuvenation hand piece over the skin, delivering intensely pulsating therapeutic light in a systematic fashion until the entire area has been covered. Immediately after your treatment, you may experience temporary redness or a darkening of brown spots, both of which should subside within the next 24 hours and can typically be concealed with makeup.
Although every patient’s aesthetic needs and goals are different, Dr. Rath generally recommends five photorejuvenation treatments, scheduled at 3-week intervals to achieve the most favorable results.
With the continued use of proper sun protection and a high quality at-home skincare regimen, the results of a complete photorejuvenation treatment series can last for years.
