What is Microdermabrasion?
As the body’s first line of defense against harsh environmental elements, the skin is exposed to a multitude of potentially damaging influences on a daily basis. This problem is compounded by the depletion of collagen and elastin (the proteins that keep the skin youthfully firm and smooth) over time, which causes our skin to appear wrinkled and aged. Fortunately, the non-invasive aesthetic enhancement treatment known as microdermabrasion can help to correct unwelcome changes to the skin, facilitating the restoration of a more youthful, luminous complexion.
At Fusion Medical Spa, located in beautiful Ruidoso, New Mexico, Dr. Stephen A. Rath employs a medical grade microdermabrasion system to help correct the damage to the skin that has accumulated as a result of the environment (i.e. sun damage, pollution), lifestyle factors (i.e. smoking, stress), and the natural aging process. Our microdermabrasion treatment combines the gentle exfoliating power of microscopic crystals with suction to remove the outermost layer of keratinized (dead) skin cells, thereby revealing radiant, glowing skin. Because it is a non-invasive procedure, patients can immediately return to their busy schedules after their painless, 20-30 minute microdermabrasion treatment.
Whether you have a special occasion you want to look your best for, or you would just like to rejuvenate the appearance and condition of your skin, microdermabrasion is an effective treatment option that offers a number of unique benefits:
- Reduces the appearance of acne scars and/or large pores
- Allows skincare products to penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin, where their active ingredients are the most effective
- Treats and corrects rough, sun-damaged, acne prone, peeling, or scaly skin
- Stimulates collagen production, which promotes the growth of new, healthy skin cells with heightened collagen and elastin levels
- Softens, tightens, and smoothes the skin, enhancing its texture and tone
After your microdermabrasion treatment, post-procedure serums and sunblock will be applied—your skin will be highly sensitive to the sun at this time, so it is very important that you avoid all forms of sun exposure (both natural and artificial—aka tanning beds) and that you wear a facial sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. The typical course of microdermabrasion includes 5-8 treatments at one week intervals, followed by intermittent maintenance treatments every 2-3 months.
