Ketamine Infusion Therapy

If you are living with chronic pain or a long-term psychiatric disorder such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), you know how devastating such an illness can be. You know how difficult it can be to cope with day-to-day social and professional responsibilities, how difficult it can be to maintain the semblance of a “normal” life. And unfortunately, for too many individuals, standard treatments for these devastating disorders simply don’t work effectively enough to enable you to return to your “normal” life.

If you have been disappointed in the long-term results of more traditional treatments and therapies, you may be ready to try a revolutionary new approach: Ketamine Infusion Therapy at Fusion Medical Spa in Ruidoso, New Mexico. When administered by a qualified health professional such as Fusion Med Spa’s lead physician, Dr. Stephen A. Rath, this powerful anaesthetic can offer highly effective relief, enabling you to slowly and steadily restore your ability to function with the bounds of normalcy. Ketamine Infusion Therapy may be an effective treatment for patients suffering from:

  • Chronic pain disorders
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Narcotics dependence

Ketamine is a powerful anaesthetic, and when abused for recreational purposes, can be harmful and even potentially dangerous. However, when correctly administered in precise, carefully-controlled dosages by a skilled, licensed physician such as Dr. Rath, ketamine has the ability to block some symptoms of pain and mental illness for long-term relief from debilitating physical and/or mental diseases. Each ketamine infusion therapy treatment is custom-tailored based on your medical history and designed to address your unique physical and mental challenges, to ensure that it is as safe and effective as possible.

How Does Ketamine Work?

Ketamine is a type of anesthetic known as an “NMDA receptor antagonist,” which means, simply put, that it inhibits the ability of our nerve cells to function properly. By reducing, or even blocking, our nerve cells’ ability to effectively transmit pain-related messages to the brain, ketamine can help minimize symptoms of pain, discomfort, depression, and anxiety. And because NMDA receptors may also be involved in the development of opioid tolerance that can lead to addiction, ketamine may be able to play a role in reducing dependence on narcotics.

Although ketamine offers an immediate, temporary sense of relaxation during the treatment, the long-term effect of Ketamine Infusion Therapy works differently. It is designed to slowly, over time, improve your ability to function “normally”, slowly reducing the symptoms of pain or mental disease inhibiting your ability to handle normal social and professional activities. Over time, as you become more capable of integrating into social and professional activities that were once so difficult, you should begin to also notice an improvement in your mood and general outlook.

Your Ketamine Infusion Experience

Ketamine infusion therapy involves slowly delivering small doses of ketamine directly into the bloodstream through an IV (not to be confused with an injection, in which the dose is injected all at once through a hypodermic needle.) The treatments are given in our peaceful, relaxing office under close medical supervision. You will be awake and conscious during the treatment. You may not be able to walk or talk during the infusion, but your mind will remain active and aware, just deeply relaxed. Although the immediate effects of the infusion should subside very quickly once the IV is removed, you will need to have a family member or friend drive you home after the treatment, and you should not operate motor vehicles or heavy machinery for at least 24 hours after the treatment.

Most patients will require multiple treatments over time before they begin to notice the relief offered by the treatment; your exact treatment plan will be determined based on your medical history and the nature of your specific issue.
